Bulls select Wendell Carter Jr with the 7th overall pick

Lauri Markkanen, meet your new best friend.

The Chicago Bulls drafted Wendell Carter Jr. with their 7th pick in the 2018 NBA draft. The 6-10, 258lb Duke forward averaged 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in his freshman season for the Blue Devils. Carter Jr. is a great rebounder and will be a force in the paint for the Bulls to compliment Markkanen’s outside scoring abilities.

Carter Jr. worked out for the Bulls two weeks ago at the Advocate Center and impressed. The Bulls have been linked to Mo Bamba the past few days according to K.C. Johnson and according to reports, the Bulls were active in trying to trade up, presumably to select Bamba. Yet the Magic took Bamba at six and the Bulls passed on Michael Porter Jr. to select Carter Jr.

It’s not a “sexy pick” but a core of Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, Carter Jr. Markkanen is promising. If these guys gel, the Bulls could be an intriguing spot in free agency come the summer of 2019.

The Bulls next pick is at 22, barring a trade. Paxson could dangle the 22nd pick and Bobby Portis to move up.
