Chicago Cubs 4th round pick Ethan Roberts was a star for Tennessee Tech University this season. His poise, love of the game, and his emotion made him a leader for his team. Ethan had a remarkable final season for the Golden Eagles posting a 2.30 ERA, striking out 103 walking just 22 batters. He was a big part of their bullpen and a reason the Cubs took him with their 4th round pick.
I had a chance to talk with Ethan and we discussed his time at TTU, motivation, hobbies and more.
Q: Can you talk about your experience at TTU?
A: My experience at Tech taught me to be the baseball player I am today. Competitive and a bulldog. It also taught me how to be a good Christian man! We focus a lot on character at TTU and making yourself the best person you can be. I’ll never forget Tennessee Tech!
Q: At what point in your life did you know you wanted to be a professional baseball player?
A: I’d say my freshman year of high school. I focused on baseball and my craft. Baseball was something I did in some sort every day of every year.
Q: Who is the biggest influence on your baseball career?
A: My father. He has pushed me and told me that I can do unimaginable things! He always supports me no matter what.
Q: Did you have any communicating with the Cubs during the pre draft process?
A: Yes I talked to Alex McClure, their area scout.
Q: What’s your best pitch/pitch you need to work on?
A: My best pitch is my cutter and I am working on my change up.
Q: Do you see yourself as a bullpen guy in the pros or could you be a starter?
A: I see myself in the pen and helping my team win in big situations!
Q: What are your hobbies outside of baseball?
A: Spending time with my wife and friends. I also like fortnite and I like to fish.
Q: Lastly, what would be your message to Cubs fans? What are they getting in Ethan Roberts?
A: My message to Cubs fans would be that I will give you my heart and soul! I will compete to the best of my ability and help this organization win ball games. In me you are getting a bulldog on the hill who will do anything to win.
Thank you Ethan for taking the time to talk with me. It was an honor. Good luck and we will be keeping up with you throughout
