Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Population 107,403 and home to Chicago Cubs 6th round pick Kohl Franklin.
I was fortunate enough to interview Franklin. Here is what we discussed.
Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your baseball career?
A: My dad, no doubt. Ever since I could remember, my Dad and I have been working on making me a better baseball player.
His father, Jay, was a former pro and his uncle, Ryan Franklin, made the All-Star team in 2009 as a member of the Cardinals.
Q: After being selected by the Cubs, was it a no brainer you would sign with the team or you still thought about going to OU?
A: It was a dream come true, but there is still a lot to think about.
Q: Did you have any interactions with the Cubs during the pre-draft process?
A: Yes, I had a pre-draft workout with the Cubs.
Franklin missed some of the 2018 season with a broken foot but he told me “it’s at 100%.”
Q: What are your expectations if you chose to sign with the Cubs and report to short season rookie ball?
A: I want to get outs, and get to know the program. Also, I want to get comfortable with everything.
I’m telling you guys, you want Franklin to join the Cubs organization. He’s extremely humble and would move through the minor leagues quickly. The 2018 All-American Honorable Mention would be a name to watch!
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of baseball?
A: Hunting, hanging with friends, and video games! ( I bet Kohl is a beast at Fortnite.)
Q: What is your best pitch? What pitch are you working on?
A: My change up is my best pitch and I am still developing my curveball.
Side note: Franklin’s fastball has been clocked at 93 mph.
Q: Who is your favorite MLB player?
A: Max Scherzer, no doubt. I love the mentality he plays the game with.
Thank you Kohl for taking the time to chat with me. It was an honor. Check back with Windy City Chronicle this week for another interview with Cubs 4th round selection Ethan Roberts from Tennessee Tech U!
