Reports surfaced last weekend during the NBA Combine in Chicago that the Bulls have “promised” Boise State standout Chandler Hutchinson he will be selected at 22.
Prior to the report, I had no background on Hutchison. Neither did I ever see a team promise a player they would take him. Hutchison withdrew from the NBA combine and that can be connected to a promise.
Hutchinson, a 6′ 7″ guard, averaged 20 points and 7.7 rebounds a game during his final season with the Broncos. He is a natural scorer, shot 35% from three last season and 72% at the rim. Another stats that catches your eye is 7.2 free throws attempted per game.
Based on this report, the Bulls could be eyeing a big man at 7. Mo Bamba would be a perfect scenario for the Bulls. A true rim protector and would be a great compliment to Lauri Marrkanen. Also, there was video of him working on his three point shot over the weekend. Five guys on the floor who can shoot the three? Dangerous.
Drafting Hutchison at 22 would put the Bulls out of the question of drafting say Michael Porter or Mikal Bridges at the top of the draft. Porter Jr. would fit right into what the Bulls are trying to accomplish. John Paxson said that the Bulls will focus on adding a wing player and Porter Jr. would be a home run. Standing at 6′ 10″, the former Mizzou Tiger is explosive and can make an impact on both ends of the floor. He can play multiple positions and his size helps him a lot on defense. Porter Jr. is the guy to guard LeBron because right now no one on the roster can.
Bridges burst onto the college scene last season, averaging 17.7 PPG while shooting 43% from three. He is a tremendous athlete who can also attack the basket. Defense is not his strong suit but could develop into a solid one. He will be a knockdown shooter from the start but Paxson did refer to someone who could impact the game on both ends of the court.
From the numbers and tape I have seen on Hutchison, he would not be a bad pick by the Bulls. Now to answer the question, is he the right pick at 22? It’s hard to say. Hutchison could be one of the best available come 22 and fits the wing profile the Bulls are looking for. I would not have a problem drafting him.
Hutchison could be a home run for the Bulls. He could be a guy that steps right in to the starting lineup. We will not know until he is actually taken at 22 and until he hits the court on Madison St. He proved over the course of his college career that he has worked on his game and he is a dynamic player. There is no guarantee, but I definitely see why Hutchison could be the pick at 22 in a month.
