Stan Bowman made it very clear the Blackhawks would not be buyers ahead of the February 26th NHL trade deadline a few weeks ago.
Instead, the Blackhawks should be focused on shipping guys out of town in return for draft picks or prospects.
The Blackhawks have traded defenseman Michal Kempny to the Washington Capitals for a third round pick in the 2018 NHL draft.
Kempny, an unrestricted free agent after this season, has played in just 31 games this season. He failed to find a consistent role in the lineup in his two years in Chicago and maybe a change of scenery will do him good. As the Captials make another run at the Stanley Cup, Kempny gives them solid depth and who knows, he could find a role.
A third round pick in return for a unrestricted free agent is a win-win for the Blackhawks. With playoffs still a longshot, it makes plenty of sense to trade some assets for draft picks.
The Blackhawks now have an open roster spot. Stay tuned to Windy City Chronicle for Blackhawks updates from Thomas Gibbons and our beat writer Tristan Angulo.
