Some interesting rumors have appeared from a Japanese sports outlet, nikkansports.com, have said that the Cubs are emerging as one of the favorites to land free agent pitcher Yu Darvish. A tweet had emerged from them just yesterday. To translate, it says, “Last year the world’s number one cubs suddenly emerged in the fight against FA Darvish.”
There have been no real rumors regarding the Cubs and Darvish other than this, so take it with a grain of salt. But it is intriguing none the less. Darvish, 31, last year made his fourth All Star game and was traded to the Dodgers at the deadline. Regular season between Texas and Los Angeles he pitched to a 3.86 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 1.16 WHIP and 209 strikeouts in 186.2 innings. However, he really struggled in the World Series last year as he had a 21.60 ERA and 3.30 WHIP in 3.1 innings.
Darvish will likely seek a big contract over 4 plus years. While he is a good pitcher, he is a risk considering his age and injury history. It never seemed like the Cubs intended to go after him especially considering Jake Arrieta is on the market and seeking something similar. Probably not something I would take overall seriously, but an interesting rumor.
In other news the Steve Cishek deal in official. Two years, $13 million. The 31-year old was a combined 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances with the Mariners and Rays last season and gave up only 26 hits in 44.2 innings to go along with 41 strikeouts.
