Bears Notebook: Familiar faces back at Halas, Quintin Demps back at practice and more

The Chicago Bears have made numerous roster moves this week in their preparation for the San Francisco 49ers. Some familiar faces return to Lake Forest, OLB Lamarr Houston and S Chris Prosinski have rejoined the team giving the Bears much needed depth for Sunday. So why them? Let’s break it down.

Lamarr Houston was cut before the start of this season. The former Raider suffered two ACL tears while in Chicago and his lack of availability led to him being dismissed. So why bring him back?

The Bears are short-handed at outside linebacker with Leonard Floyd out for the season and Pernell McPhee is not putting up any numbers. Willie Young has been out with a torn triceps and there is no other OLBs on the roster have proven they can impact games. Houston got healthy and appeared in five games for the Texans this year before being put on waivers.

This is no long term move by any means. The Bears need help and Houston appears to be healthy. For the remaining five games, Houston will provide some much needed depth. From a production stand point, Houston totaled 7 tackles and a sack with the Texans. The Bears are not looking for huge numbers, but it’s another body that is better than Howard Jones and Isaiah Irving right now.

Adrian Amos (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday and probably expect the same on Thursday. So the Bears signed S Chris Prosinski on Thursday and waived OLB Howard Jones. Prosinski spent two seasons previously with the Bears (2015-16) and was released on September 4th after being replaced on IR.

Do not look for Prosinski to get defensive reps. Deandre Houston-Carson who has been a great player for the Bears on special teams but is on the path to not playing on Sunday which is why Prosinski was brought back. He is familiar with the system and made an impact on ST for the Bears in 2015-’16.

I expect Eddie Jackson at free safety and second year man Deon Bush at strong safety on Sunday.

Last week, Deiondre’ Hall was designated to return from IR, opening  a 21 day window for him to be put on the active roster. On Thursday, S Quintin Demps retunred to practice after suffering a broken arm that landed him on IR just three games into the season.

Hall must not be ready hence the Prosinski signing. I am a big fan of Hall and hopefully he can find a role with this team going forward. The Bears moved him to safety this offseason and I liked the move. His length and ball skills yells safety but a hamstring injury in the preseason finale has stunned his development. This off season will be very big for him to watch tape at safety and come into 2018 competing for a job.

The Bears can only designated two guys for return from injured reserve so former first round pick Kevin White will not return this season. White has only appeared in only five games in his pro career and has no touchdown catches. White will no doubt be on the roster next season but his role is uncertain. You want to utilize his big play ability but his accountability is not there. Injuries happen but White is not apart of the Bears future. He will play out his contract but will not be back after next season unless he miraculously puts up big numbers.

When the Bears seemed to be turning a corner earlier this season, it all went downhill. Standing at 3-8, the Bears are once again in the race for one of the top picks in the 2018 draft. With winnable games left on the schedule, there is still plenty of doubt that the Bears will find a way to lose. The one win 49ers come to Soldier Field with Jimmy Garoppolo making his first start in the white and gold.
