Latest Rumors surrounding the Chicago Cubs

By: Alex Patt

It is early in the offseason, but plenty of rumors are swirling. Some involve trades and some involve free agent signings. Some rumors have a bit more legitimacy to them than others, but it is interesting to go through all the talks regardless of how real they are.

Right now there is a lot of talk about Alex Cobb coming to Chicago. There are a lot of signs that this will happen. Cobb has expressed wanting to re-unite with Joe Maddon and Jim Hickey, both coaches he worked for in Tampa Bay. The 30-year old starting pitcher declined his offer with the Rays and now is officially a free agent. He would be a very solid 4 pitcher behind Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Kyle Hendricks. Last year he returned from injury and went 12-10 with a 3.66 ERA, 1.221 WHIP and 128 strikeouts in 179.1 innings.

MLB Trade Rumors suggested an interest in Lance Lynn. The Cardinals righty also returned from injury this past year. He went 11-8 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.229 WHIP. His FIP is a bit of a concern considering it was 4.82, but he also returning from Tommy John. Before his injury He was a career 3.36 FIP pitcher with a 3.37 ERA and 766 strikeouts. He would probably assume Lackey’s old role last year but with the ability to go deeper into games and be a bit more reliable.

Other rumors swirling around have brought up Orioles closer Zach Britton in a potential trade. Braves’ Ender Inciarte and and Rays Kevin Kiermaier have also been mentioned recently. Britton will really depend on if they re-sign Wade Davis. The other two seem far-fetched, but interesting looks.

Stay tuned for more rumors as we move forwards.
