The Blackhawks were 1-6 on the powerplay Monday night. Not good.
After going up 2-0 in the first period, goals from Jan Rutta and Jonathan Toews, the Blackhawks were held scoreless in the second period despite given four opportunities with the man advantage. These missed opportunities will really hurt the Hawks if the powerplay cannot connect.
Richard Panik (3) powerplay goal at 7:52 in the third period put the Blackhawks up 3-1. At 13 minutes, Maple Leafs made it a one goal game scored by Connor Brown. Then it was James van Riemsdyk on the powerplay at 15:42 that tied the game up.
The Blackhawks spent a lot of time in their defensive zone in the overtime. And just when you thought the shootout was destined to happen, Maple Leafs sensation Auston Matthews beats Forsberg glove side for the win.
Anton Forsberg stopped 39 shots in his Blackhawks debut, but the Blackhawks offense was stalled and could not help him out.
The Blackhawks are back in action Tuesday night in Montreal for a showdown against Andrew Shaw and the Canadians. Corey Crawford will be back in goal and I expect coach Joel Quenneville to go with the same lineup.
