The Blackhawks continue to look to revamp the old and slowing down defense and a big move has just been completed to begin that process. It was announced early Wednesday morning that the Blackhawks singed 26-year old Jan Rutta out of Czech Republic.
Rutta at 6-foot-3, 198 pounds is a dynamic defenseman who has scoring ability and much needed quickness. Spending his last several years with the Pirati Chomutov, he scored eight goals with 24 assists this past year including two playoff goals. He also played in the IIHF World Championships with current Blackhawks defenseman Michal Kempny.
It was reported that several teams were in on the Czech defenseman but ultimately singed with the Hawks on a one-year entry-level deal. This move will be very important seeing as older defenseman like Oduya and Campbell will hit the free agent market and Trevor van Reimsdyk very possibly heading to Las Vegas in the expansion draft.
Rutta hopefully will give some more speed and scoring from the blueline which was missing greatly least year especially in the playoffs.
